Luster Workshop with Lisa Zolandz

A Weekend of Fire, Color, and Curiosity

There’s something special that happens when a group of curious makers gathers around kilns, glaze buckets, and test tiles—and our recent LA workshop with artist Lisa Zolandz was exactly that kind of magic.

Over the course of the weekend, we dove deep into the world of glaze chemistry, exploring not just how glazes work, but why they behave the way they do. Lisa brought an incredible depth of knowledge (and an infectious enthusiasm) that made even the most technical concepts feel approachable and exciting.

Participants experimented with developing their own luster glazes—layering materials, testing combinations, and embracing the unpredictability that makes ceramics so rewarding. From mixing and application to the anticipation of opening the kiln, every step was filled with discovery. And of course, the kiln openings did not disappoint—flashes of metallic sheen, unexpected color shifts, and surfaces that truly felt one-of-a-kind.

What stood out most wasn’t just the finished pieces, but the process: the conversations, the shared problem-solving, and the joy of learning something new alongside other passionate artists.

If you’ve ever been curious about glaze chemistry or wanted to push your surface work further, this kind of workshop is an incredible place to start (or deepen your practice).
